Intellection lifts international mineral research support

Intellection  has expanded its support for international minerals industry research, becoming an industry sponsor of AMIRA International’s P9 project for the Optimisation of Mineral Processes by Modelling and Simulation.

AMIRA International is an independent association of minerals companies, which develops brokers and facilitates collaborative research projects. It currently has around 50 active R&D projects in its portfolio, valued around US$80 million.

P9 is a large university-based mineral processing research project. In its 45 years, it has re-shaped the practice of designing and optimising mineral processing plants, using mathematical modelling and computer simulation.

The 15th extension of the project, P9O, is now underway, with Intellection participating in the first sponsors’ meeting, held last week.

Intellection CEO Calvin Treacy said, “We are delighted to be involved with such a landmark research programme, joining many of our existing customers and other industry partners as P9 sponsors. We look forward to our sponsorship strengthening our relationships with industry and leading researchers.

“We also expect that the research undertaken will provide us with opportunities to further enhance our own technology and the services we offer our customers world wide.”

Calvin Treacy said the P9O vision — to improve comminution, classification and flotation performance on sponsor sites through modelling, simulation and characterisation of particles and their process environments and through training and transfer of skills and technology to the industry — was closely aligned with Intellection’s own technology development aims.

“We are quite certain our involvement with this project will strengthen the application of automated mineralogy at mine sites and processing facilities,” Calvin Treacy said.

“Intellection recently launched the R-series QEMSCAN®, a ruggedised automated mineralogy instrument suitable for on-site use at these types of locations.”

Intellection’s sponsorship of P9O complements the company’s other support for international industry research, including:

  • AMIRA Board Membership – Calvin Treacy
  • AMIRA P260E Improving Sulphide Mineral Flotation
  • Advanced Mineralogy Research Centre, Colorado School of Mines, USA
  • Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter, UK
  • NASA/USGS lunar simulant development programme
  • Numerous internal research projects with customers around the world
