Innovia Films recently exhibited a new development in active packaging for plastic products that offers new ways to attract, inform or interact with consumers.

In partnership with PragmatIC Printing, a pioneer in imprinted logic circuits, the company has successfully integrated printed electronic functionality onto its Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) label substrates.

The first prototypes of this technology were exhibited at the Packaging Innovations show held in London late last year. These prototypes are interactive bottle labels that activate a sequence of flashing lights when the bottle is held.

This is just one potential application of the technology, with Chief Executive Officer of PragmatIC Printing, Scott White, commenting that the company now aims to progress these concepts together with Innovia Films towards volume production and commercial deployment.

Steve Langstaff, OPP Product Manager at Innovia Films agrees, explaining that "this exciting development is only a small part of a larger project getting printable electronics into volume packaging markets."
