Innovia Films biodegradable and compostable flexible material, NatureFlex, has been chosen for a new range of organic, raw nutrition bars produced in the USA.
Based in San Diego, California, the GoodOnYa concept was founded by former Olympic athlete Kris Fillat. It began first with the GoodOnYa deli, offering an alternative to the everyday breakfast and lunch with an emphasis on locally produced and organic items. The GoodOnYa bar is a natural extension of this philosophy, where every ingredient is carefully chosen for its nutritional value while considering the health of the environment.
According to GoodOnYa, the NatureFlex film is biodegradable and compostable and comes from a sustainable source of wood. NatureFlex films are cellulose based, derived from renewable wood pulp and are certified to meet both the European EN13432 and American ASTM D6400 standards for compostable packaging. The wood-pulp is sourced from managed plantations from referenced suppliers operating Good Forestry principals (FSC or equivalent). NatureFlex films have a renewable biobased content of 95% by weight of material.
NatureFlex is suitable for packaging as the film begins life as a natural product, for example, wood, and breaks down in a home compost bin (or industrial compost environment). It also offers advantages for packing and converting inherent deadfold and anti-static properties, high gloss and transparency, resistance to grease and oil, good barrier to gases and aromas and a wide heat-seal range.
The final packaging structure for the product is made from metallised NatureFlex NM laminated to high gloss transparent NatureFlex NVS film. NatureFlex NM is a cellulose-based film, manufactured from renewable wood pulp and metallised in-house. It is a metallised biodegradable film suitable for home composting because of the lower level of metal, which is less than 0.02%. This slows the film’s biodegradation but does not interfere with its biodegradability in any other way. Modified coatings ensure better metal lay-down and adhesion providing a high moisture barrier with a transmission rate of less than 10g/sqm/day (38°C, 90% RH).
According to Innovia Films, the NatureFlex film is biodegradable and compostable for those packer processors keen to use sustainable packaging.
