is a range of rugged powerline modems which excel in harsh underground environments such as coal mines. Transmitting data over heavy duty power cables is emerging as a viable communication solution for many underground mining applications.
The technology is commonly known as ‘broadband powerline modems’ or just ‘powerline modems’ with the acronyms BPLM or just PLM.
Other solutions such as Fibre or Serial can be limited because of data speeds or with difficulty in expansion and termination. Powerline modems do not have these issues as power cables often exist to moving machines and exist in areas of the mine that other communication devices cant reach.
Current broadband powerline modems can deliver data up to 200Mbps but speeds of 40Mbps are typical depending on cable length and quality. With this increased bandwidth new devices such as IP Cameras can now be connected to the communication network.
