The turnkey materials handling division of Industrial Conveying (Aust) engineer a system to collapse cardboard boxes destined for export back to their original location. The client needed a solution to automatically collapse and flat pack boxes. The requirement was quite unique due to the large size of the boxes (1100mm x 750mm x 760mm) and the telescoping of the inner and outer section of the boxes.
Industrial Conveying’s tailored box collapsing system takes the emptied cartons as they leave the existing production line and runs the box through several automated stations. Not only were the Industrial Conveying engineers instructed to devise a line that folds these boxes into a flat pack arrangement as they come off the existing product line, an equally important challenge was to ensure removal from each box of an inner a plastic liner.
Functions of the box collapsing system include:
- The first station of the box collapsing system aligns the box and removes a retaining band (used to hold the plastic liner in position while the contents are being emptied in the existing system) from the outside of each box
- The next station of the box collapsing system automatically removes the plastic liner from inside the box before moving it to the collapsing/ aligning station. At this station the top and bottom flaps are aligned to allow the ‘closing up’ of the inner and outer telescopic sections, after this is completed the box is collapsed into a flat pack configuration
- Flat pack boxes are then conveyed to a pick up point where the box is then transported to one of three destinations points for automatic stacking of the flat pack boxes. The destination point is determined by the box types
