Uninterruptible power supply or UPS systems protect critical servers and networking equipment in a data centre environment in the IT industry. Similarly, protecting PLCs in the industrial automation environment is just as critical, given that these devices are even more susceptible to power disturbances than standard office IT equipment.
PLCs are exposed to heavy disturbances on the electric network from electric motors, relays, welders and other equipment, causing the PLC to suffer corruption, loss of data and even failure if not protected correctly.
It is important therefore, to install a UPS system on all PLCs; the UPS not only safeguards against a full power outage but also filters and removes all unseen electrical anomalies that occur such as sags, brownouts, harmonics and spikes.
A UPS has consumable parts (sealed lead acid batteries), which need to be inspected and replaced on a regular basis. Ignoring critical power protection can result in a major equipment failure.
