IDM Instruments Pty Ltd presents Coefficient of Friction testers (COF) designed to determine the coefficients of static and kinetic friction of various substances at specified test conditions.  

Coefficient of Friction (COF) is the resisting force that arises when the surface of one substance slides, or tends to slide over an adjoining surface of itself or another substance.  

Two kinds of friction are possible between surfaces of solids in contact:  

  • Static friction or the resistance opposing the force required to start to move one surface over another 
  • Dynamic friction or the resistance opposing the force to move one surface over another at a variable, fixed or predetermined speed     
Slip is the lubricity of two surfaces sliding in contact with each other. In effect, it is the exact opposite of friction as high coefficient of friction denotes low slip and low coefficient of friction denotes high slip.  

Coefficient of Friction (COF) is the ratio of the frictional force resisting movement of the surface being tested to the force applied normal to that surface (the weight of the material above that surface).  

Coefficient of Static Friction (or starting friction) is the ratio of the force resisting initial motion of the surfaces to the normal force.  

Coefficient of Kinetic Friction (or sliding friction) is the ratio of the force required to sustain the uniform relative movement of the surfaces to the normal force.  

Normal Force is the force acting perpendicular to the surfaces in contact.  

IDM's COF testers can determine the coefficients of static and kinetic friction of plastic film, sheeting and paper when sliding over themselves or other substances at specified test conditions.  

IDM’s Model C0008 COF testers employ a stationary sled with a moving plane with coefficient of friction being measured directly from the resistance to tangential motion and the applied weight pressing the two pieces of sample together.  

Test method:

One specimen of the material under test is clamped to the horizontal plane surface and the other to the specimen sled. The plane is pulled under the stationary sled and the force or fictional resistance is measured and recorded.  

Currently in use at various industries worldwide for friction testing, IDM's COF testers come with custom options including PC control software, heated platens and touch screen LCD.
