PTI, represented in Australia by IDM Instruments , has released the Elmendorf tear tester for determining the tearing resistance of paper and board. The instrument adheres to ISO, TAPPI, BS and DIN standards.
It has pneumatic clamps and automatically precuts samples with a built-in knife, allowing fast test cycles. It also has a built-in PC control and a large graphic display where test results and various statistical functions are displayed.
Once a test is completed, the pendulum automatically returns to its home position and samples are released from the clamps, ready for the next test to begin. The safety brake is automatically activated to stop the pendulum once a test is completed. On a manual tear tester users would use their hand to stop the pendulum after a test.
Automating the process increases accuracy and consistency. The tester is suitable paper mills and research laboratories. The machine can be linked to external PC via an RS 232 cable. Results can be displayed in percentage of pendulum capacity or in mN. The machine can store up to 99 results and has the option of a printer output.
