Global joint integrity specialist and engineering services company Hydratight has introduced a new portable and lightweight refacing tool designed for hard-to-reach pipe flanges whose integrity must be maintained.
The cost-effective and safe QuickFace refacing tool was presented at the recent AOG exhibition in February.
The ultra-light, ultra-portable QuickFace tool is a new range of hand-powered refacing tools that retains the accuracy and performance of the bigger air- and electrically-powered models in Hydratight's extensive range while providing the convenience of portability.
The extremely portable QuickFace refacing tool turns a two-man operation with heavy equipment, compressors or portable generators into a one-man job that can be undertaken anywhere a technician can physically reach, be it the top of a refinery installation or miles from the nearest power supply.
Hydratight Operations Manager - Australia, Mr Joe Stewart explains that many flanges have to be refaced in-situ without readily-available power because the flange is difficult or inaccessible, which can turn out to be not only an expensive process but also result in doubtful integrity.
He points out that most flanged joint leaks happen on pipes in the 1” - 4” range. Many leaks are caused by poor joint-surface finish, and correcting them usually involves finding a resurfacing machine, competent technicians and the time to complete the job.
He adds that the compact QuickFace is small enough to be a permanent addition to any technical equipment store and is a reliable alternative to transporting teams and equipment by helicopter and running generators or compressors at great expense.
QuickFace refacing tools involve an easy process of selecting the correct sized collets and lead screw for the operation followed by inserting the tool body in the pipe end, and centring it with adjustable collets and clamps to provide truly concentric operation and accuracy.
The tool arm is then rotated by hand with the worm-gear mechanism providing a perfect spiral ‘gramophone’ finish. The tool can be adjusted with a calibrated slide to define cut-depth and the correct finish.
Key features of Hydratight’s QuickFace portable refacing tool:
- Weighs only 6.8kg, and a mere 15kg in its storage case with interchangeable collets and lead screws
- Refaces flange surfaces on pipes measuring 1-4 inches with ease, using standard half-inch cutting tools
- Interchangeable lead screws make it suitable for resurfacing damaged raised-face and lens-ring joint flanges to required standards of finish
- User-friendly operation produces finish within specification
- Hand-powered operation eliminates power supply requirement
