Vacuum UV lamps (VUV lamps) for the kitchen extraction air photolyse greases and odours in the ductwork and facilitate its scrubbing. The use of fats and oils in kitchens leads to deposits in canopies and ductwork filters. Fat can catch only up to 95% in an exhaust air flow. The rest of the fat is deposited inside the body of the canopy and in the ductwork. This makes cleaning difficult, is unhygienic and also creates a high fire risk.
By fitting a single vacuum UV lamp in the kitchen hood, fats and odours are photolysed. The UV radiation at a wavelength of 185nm destroys fats and greases. At the same time, ozone is generated from the oxygen which surrounds the lamp. The ozone breaks down to excited oxygen, which continues to have an oxidising effect in the ductwork of the canopy.
As a result only a white ash remains on the inside of the canopy and the ductwork and which is not combustible and is easily wiped away. The special long-life coating in the lamp tube permits an operating life of the vacuum UV lamp of up to 10,000 hours. Technical improvements now allow the use of the lamp itself at ambient temperatures of up to 80ºC.
Heraeus Noblelight has increased the power of the vacuum UV lamp enormously. In place of the conventional UV lamp cassette, which consists of four to six low pressure lamps, one single VUV lamp is now sufficient. This saves both space and energy. In order to use the vacuum UV radiation in the effective way, the lamp should be fitted centrally and horizontally in the middle of the canopy.
