OCME S.r.l. from Parma Italy has solved the end of line packaging challenges for Bundaberg Brewed Drinks with the installation of a Pegasus robotic palletiser with manipulator infeed.

OCME is a world leader in packaging, filling, handling and palletising systems for the consumer products industry.

Located in Queensland, Australia, Bundaberg Brewed Drinks is a family owned brewery renowned for their famous Bundaberg Ginger Beer and various brewed beverages that are exported to over 30 countries around the world. All the drinks are shipped in high quality cardboard sleeves in a 3x2 format.

Bundaberg sought to improve the efficiency of their end of line packaging processes in addition to the handling of their bottles as their previous machinery was susceptible to carton damage and struggled to operate in the high humidity environment of Bundaberg’s summer.

A key requirement for the new palletiser was its ability to create layered patterns of cartons containing lightweight glass bottles that were filled with hot liquid without damaging them. Following a review of several palletisers incorporating technologies such as traditional split type, roller deck handling and full layer robotic handling, Bundaberg Brewed Drinks opted for OCME’s robotic palletisers.

OCME conducted extensive testing on the Bundaberg product at their facility in Italy and were able to address the Bundaberg management’s concerns, as the technology had never been trialled in Australia before without the use of support under the cartons.

OCME’s Pegasus robotic palletiser performed better than competitor systems and also fulfilled Bundaberg’s rigorous product handling criteria. The complete installation consisted of the robotic palletiser combined with an OCME Altair N60 wraparound case packer and a TechnoWrapp B150 stretch wrapper.

According to Darren Smith, Engineering Manager at Bundaberg Brewed Drinks, following the successful installation, commissioning and training phases, the palletiser has increased their capacity from 20 to 66 cartons per minute with corresponding increase in efficiency.

OCME S.r.l. is represented and supported in Oceania by HBM Packaging & Plastics Technologies .
