World-leading plastics machinery supplier, Krauss Maffei Extrusion of Munich Germany was recently approached by a Netherlands-based pipe manufacturer with a challenging project.
The company required a line that could produce PVC foam core pipes made of 100% post consumer regrind for the core layer.
Krauss Maffei supplied KMD 90-34 E/R and KMD 75-36 E/R extruders, which included new 36 L/D screw geometry specifically developed by Krauss Maffei engineers for the processing of micronized regrind. This new design enabled an enlarged process window with adjustable plastification and melt temperature that fully compensated for the material fluctuations inherent in reclaimed materials.
The line comprising of Krauss Maffei extruders produces 110mm diameter pipes with outputs up to 1000kg/hour consisting of an inner layer of regular foam cells. The metre weight of 1.17kg/m was easily achieved with all mechanical pipe properties in accordance with pipes manufactured from virgin materials, as well as with industry standards.
