Krauss Maffei Extrusion of Munich, Germany, represented in Oceania by HBM Packaging & Plastics Technologies , worked with Egeplast, to supply a high speed PE pipe production line, which can produce 3-layer HDPE and PP telecommunication pipes, with diameters of 32 to 63mm.
Egeplast were constrained by space and required an extrusion line with high production speeds and large outputs. The solution was a KME 90-36 single screw extruder, which produces the middle layer, and two KME 60-36 single screw extruders to produce the inner and outer layers respectively. The layers are joined in a KM3L RKW 73 3-layer pipehead.
A small coextruder, mounted above the line to save space, supplies the material for marking stripe. The motor and gearing for the melt pump and upstream screen changer are also mounted above the line, to make optimal use of available space. The PE pipe production line has speeds up to 40 meters a minute. The PE pipe production/extrusion line has two operator consoles, from either of which the whole line can be controlled. This allows the operator to control the line from a practical location. For their short run production requirements, Egeplast have ten Krauss Maffei ‘QuickSwitch’ production lines, a system for pipe dimension change on the fly.
