H & H Machine Tools has released a bi-rotary machining head for its machining centres. It is designed for aerospace component manufacturers using five-axes continuous machining and tool/die makers operating three and two-axes machining.
The bi-rotary machining head allows for continuous positioning of its two rotary axes. The head is configured to allow continuous five-axes machining or for three and two-axes machining.
Both rotary axes are supported with hydraulic clamping systems in order to obtain optimum rigidity for roughing operations. Both axes are driven through digital servo motors and are equipped with high resolution measuring devices for positioning accuracy. The rotary axes can be positioned in 0.001° increments.
A rotational speed of 3000°/min for both rotary axes is required to keep up with a feed rate of 40m/min on the linear axes. The two-axes head can be equipped with different motor spindles.
Choosing between different motor spindles enables a user to tailor the head to individual production requirements. Spindles can be configured to 30,000 rpm with 20kW power or 40,000 rpm with 22kW power. The spindle can also be configured to 40,000 rpm with 40kW power.
The spindle itself is kept at a constant temperature by water-based cooling system. The spindle bearing temperature is constantly monitored through the control system.
