Grip Guard Non Slip was recently asked to inspect some stairs at a Melbourne school in order to provide a floor safety solution for the outdoor staircase. The timber stairs are an attractive feature, but were slippery and presented a slip and fall risk for students, staff and guests.
As the stairs were exposed to the weather and would often become wet, carborundum stair nosings were chosen to enhance safety on the stairs. Additionally, because the stair treads are quite deep, it was decided that the depth of the nosings should be increased from the required 50mm to 80mm.
By providing a colour contrast between the stair nosings and the stairs will also help pedestrians see the stair edge in low lighting. This contrast avoids the risk of a pedestrian missing the step and tripping, which could result in serious injury. Black stair nosings were chosen to provide the luminous contrast required by Australian Standards and the Building Code of Australia.
Grip Guard carborundum stair nosings are an economical, long-term stair safety solution. Pedestrians at the school have been provided with greater safety and the timber stairs will be protected from damage to the edges as a result of constant traffic.
