CPA Australia’s Tasmania Division, in conjunction with Greentree International’s business partner Synateq, established the Synateq / CPA Australia Young Accountant Awards to foster recognition and showcase the contributions and achievements of young people within the Tasmanian accounting and finance professions.
The awards targeted individuals under 35 years of age who have excelled in their professional finance or accounting related role.
Three finalists were selected based on their ability to demonstrate business achievement and community contribution in their field.
The judging panel expressed their delight at the calibre of the finalists in the awards’ inaugural year, saying they represent some of the very best and brightest young Tasmanians working in the accounting and finance profession. The winner was announced at a dinner held in Hobart on 31 October.
The night’s big winner was Shaun Bleathman, who took away the prize of $5000 and a laptop computer donated by Synateq. Shaun’s organisation Newman and Associates received the employer’s prize, a $10,000 gift voucher towards the purchase of Greentree Business Software (donated by Greentree International and Synateq) and a $5000 QlikView Business Intelligence Software license (donated by QlikView and Synateq).
Shaun, at the age of 28, advanced to a Partner and Director of Newman & Associates. He is a major contributor to the business and aside from his diverse client base, is a key driver of strategic management within the organisation.
Shaun takes an interest in the professional development of younger accountants through the CPA Mentoring Program, and assists numerous not-for-profit organisations with accounting and finance requirements.
Shaun is on the board of directors of the Self Help Workshop Inc, the largest employer of people with disabilities in greater Launceston and provides those with disabilities meaningful employment and training.
Shaun also holds an informal role advising the Committee of Pedder Patter Inc. in areas of financial management, business expansion, governance, and policy setting. Pedder Patter operates non-profit child care centres for the Launceston community.
“Synateq and CPA Tasmania are to be applauded for creating these awards and did a great job organising the whole awards process. Greentree was really pleased to provide sponsorship for this event.
“The awards dinner was a wonderful opportunity to recognise the Young Accountants and mix with the Tasmanian accounting fraternity. It was also a good chance to meet existing Greentree customers and who knows - maybe some new ones?” says Greentree CEO Peter Dickinson.
