Trish Griffiths, executive manager of Go Grains Health and Nutrition, was recognised for her efforts in promoting the health benefits of grain-based foods with the inaugural Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Seed of Gold award.
Presented during the Agriculture Australia Conference at Melbourne’s Hilton on the Park by GRDC chairman Terry Enright, the Seed of Gold award recognises the recipient’s passion and commitment to the Australian grains industry. Enright said Griffiths was the worthy recipient of the inaugural award.
“Griffiths has been the driving force behind Go Grains, which has achieved outstanding success in promoting the benefits to human health of eating foods based on cereal and pulse grains,” he said.
“Go Grains enjoys membership and participation from food industry companies, manufacturers, research organisations including the CSIRO and industry organisations including the GRDC and BRI Australia, where Go Grains was first conceived by Griffiths.
“Go Grains has built up valuable resources to support the promotion of the health benefits of grain and grain-based foods in Australia and overseas, establishing an enviable reputation in the media.
“By commissioning and publicising reviews of scientific studies, Go Grains has shown Australian and overseas consumers the many health benefits of grain in their diets, such as reducing the risk of heart disease, Type-2 diabetes and bowel cancer. It has also been particularly successful in addressing negative consumer perceptions about carbohydrates in the diet.
“From humble beginnings and despite an initial lack of industry enthusiasm, Griffiths and Go Grains have gone from strength to strength. Go Grains was incorporated in 2005, and Griffiths – formerly an employee of BRI Australia where the concept began – was last month employed as executive manager of Go Grains Health and Nutrition.
“The GRDC – funded by grain growers and the Australian Government – is proud to be a foundation member of Go Grains and very pleased to present Griffiths with the inaugural Seed of Gold award.
“This award has been created to recognise the recipient’s passion and commitment to the Australian grains industry. The inaugural award recognises the success of Griffiths and Go Grains in meeting its objectives to build consumer trust in grain-based foods and to encourage higher consumption.
“This has significant benefits for consumers across the world, as well as Australian grain growers.”
