Absorbents for oil and fuel spills from Global Spill Control
Absorbents for oil and fuel spills, available from Global Spill Control , are used to contain and absorb oil and fuel spilt on water.
Absorbents are made from polypropylene.

Polypropylene absorbs hydrocarbons but is water repellent (hydrophobic). This enables it to float on water for many months at a time.
Polypropylene absorbs diesel at 10 times its own weight and oils at 20 times its own weight.
Polypropylene material is granulated and assembled into an outer mesh to form sausages (booms) and pillows.
Pads are 45cm square x 8mm, thick and rolls are of the same material 90cm wide and 40 metres long.
A number of other absorbent products are available such as drum top covers, refuelling mats, bilge socks, etc.
Absorbents for chemical spills are made of the same material but the addition of a small quantity of surfactant (detergent) during manufacture allows the absorbent to absorb all liquids.
