A sealing system installed by Garlock Sealing Technologies at a corrugated cardboard packaging facility has helped prevent seal failures and increased service life of the seal.
The packaging facility located in Southern United States was having trouble finding a seal for their abrasive and caustic applications. Frequent seal failures led to considerable production losses in addition to creating environmental health and safety issues.
The mill was using a mechanical seal and flush bushing for the application, but sought an alternative based on the catastrophic failures that occurred every 6-8 weeks.
The seals cost $2,500 in addition to the labour cost for 8 man hours to replace the seal and 4 hours of lost production.
Garlock Hydra-Just sealing system was installed into the problem pump. In addition to cost savings on the Hydra-Just seal, the packaging facility had their real savings coming from the enhanced service life of the seal that increased from 8 weeks to 1 year.
Garlock Hydra-Just sealing systems improved the company’s bottom line through monetary savings on the product cost, extended service life, reduced water consumption as well as the associated cost of removing and treating the excess water from the product.
The Hydra-Just seal only requires gallons per hour of water as opposed to gallons per minute required to maintain a mechanical seal. Since the Hydra-Just seal is process exclusive, no flush water enters the product.
