A full-day conference at Freight Week 2007 this September will put the spotlight on the Australian and international trends in waterfront logistics management and its interface with other freight modes.
Waterfront – trends, technology and the future will bring together stevedores, shippers and shipping companies at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, on Thursday 20 September.
Freight Week 2007 runs from 15 to 21 September, and is presented jointly by the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) and the Victorian Transport Association (VTA).
VTA CEO Philip Lovell said the waterfront sessions would cover the land-side interface, technology, growth challenges, competition and many other key issues.
“This will be a must-attend event for anyone involved with waterfront and import/export, suppliers, regulators and consultants,” he said.
“The day will include major addresses by Patrick and DP World on future growth trends, infrastructure developments, technology and intermodal operations and competition.”
“Peak bodies including the Australian Logistics Council (ALC), Shipping Australia Limited (SAL) will discuss their views and initiatives on the waterfront and the Australian Freight Councils Network.”
A session on land interface and international supply chain logistics will cover topical issues such as business activity harmonisation to address the challenges of a 24/7 workplace and the mismatch of operating hours across the chain.
High efficiency vehicles will also feature, along with empty container management, land infrastructure developments and the question of whether rail can capture more port-related freight.
Lovell said the conference was designed as a useful contribution to the future direction of the waterfront.
“This session should interest everyone involved in the business of moving freight in and around the waterfront,” he said.
“Future growth trends show enormous opportunities and threats, so we must all work together for the best outcome – and this is one very effective way we can do that.”
