TRANS-TASMAN food ministers asked Food Standards Australia New Zealand in 2004 to investigate mandatory fortification of a range of foods with folate as a possible way to reduce neural tube defects, including spina bifida.
Industry bodies expressed concern about the choice of bread-making flour as the vehicle for mandatory fortification of food with folate.
AFGC CEO Dick Wells said the food and beverage industry understands the public health issue, and supports the policy principles for food fortification.
“It is unfortunate that FSANZ has chosen to recommend bread-making flour as the product to be compulsorily fortified, particularly when there are other food products that would be better suited to delivering folate to the target population.”
Rules governing folate in flour must consider consumer choice and be labelled as such, to avoid the risk of a vitamin B12 deficiency, which can be masked by folate.
The NZ Green Party said organic flour must be exempt from the mandatory folate fortification and the substance be added at the bakery rather than the mill, so that consumers retain a choice.
