FESTO will display a wide range of products on its stand at Automate 2002 including the new MHE2 fast switching valves. Compact, with versatile connector options and high repitition accuracy, these valves switch in less than two milliseconds, depending on type.
For high-speed ejection, sorting, adhesive bonding, dosing, packaging, handling or vacuum applications, the Festo high-speed valves type MH...2 are the ideal pneumatic components to choose whenever there is a need for short cycle times or a need to tap into productivity reserves.
This new generation of directly-controlled, pressure-relieved 24V dc poppet valves with flow rates of 100, 200 or 400L/min and switching times of 2 or 6ms allow very fast cycle times.
In conjunction with excellent repetition accuracy, with deviations of less than 0.2ms the advantages of these valves will be appreciated by users in applications such as adhesive bonding or the precise dosing of pharmaceutical products.
Switching times of less than 2ms can be achieved with 24V dc without the need for external over-excitation.
An integrated electronics unit reduces the supply voltage after a few milliseconds to the internal operating voltage of 12V dc. It is thus possible to trigger the valves simply and directly via the standard 24V dc 1A outputs of a PLC.
Festo will also display the Smart Soft Stop with a new end-position controller SPC-11 and expanded functionality. This allows the advantages of the Smart Soft Stop system to be exploited with standard and swivel cylinders just as with cylinders with an intermediate position.
A reduction of up to 30 per cent in the travel times of pneumatic drives and a dramatic lowering of vibration levels increase productivity and enhance the service life of overall installations.

A regular DGPL rodless linear drive with shock absorbers achieves, for example, 13 double strokes in 20 seconds. Without shock absorbers or sensors, but coupled to an electronic end-position controller and a linear potentiometer, the same drive achieves 21 double strokes in the same time.
This requires a displacement encoder, an MPYE 5/3-way proportional valve and a small electronic end-position controller (SPC 10 or SPC 11).
This continuously compares the setpoint and actual positions of the drive and uses the proportional directional control valve to optimise the cylinder motion.
Smart Soft Stop enables intermediate or end positions to be reached quicker and with less vibration and noise. These intermediate positions open up further possible areas of applications for pneumatics, such as ejector or waiting positions, which can be produced by conventional means only at high cost.
