The Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia has announced the finalists for the 2012 Australian Supply Chain and Logistics Awards, the longest running national awards program in the industry.

BlueScope Steel has secured a nomination for the Environmental Excellence Award, which "recognises corporate leadership contributing to the solution of environmental sustainability within our industry through performance and action."

BlueScope acknowledges the fact that producing iron and steel inevitably leads to emissions of greenhouses gases. Recognising this as an ongoing issue, the company has established a series of Greenhouse Gas Policy Principles, which are approved by the company's Executive Leadership Team.

These Principles provide the measure by which the company will assess climate change policies of government and all other parties, in addition to providing a basis on which the company may seek to develop its own policy proposals.

BlueScope states that its objective is to "to find effective ways to reduce emissions, while maintaining the international competitiveness of our operations."

Wherever possible, the company seeks to:
  • reduce the generation of waste materials at their sources
  • reuse waste materials onsite
  • recycle waste materials offsite; and
  • minimise the storage or disposal of these materials either on or offsite, pending the further development of processes to increase their practical reuse.
The winners of the 2012 Australian Supply Chain and Logistics Awards will be announced at a gala dinner on Thursday 8th November at the Brisbane Convention Centre, Southbank.
