With thousands of companies listed on Ferret.com.au , and dozens of new products and services added to the site each day, it is not always easy to keep up to date with every new development in the mining, manufacturing and industrial sectors as they come to hand.
In this, a new regular feature, we will take a closer look at specific categories of products and services on Ferret.com.au, discussing some of the latest and greatest innovations from the wide portfolio of businesses listed on the site.
Our first focus is on industrial computers and software, a crucial part of most, if not all, industrial businesses. While at the level of technical specification any computer system can in theory be adapted to work in an industrial setting, there are several factors that facilitate the need to develop customised solutions specifically designed for use in such environments.
The often hazardous ambient conditions in industrial applications, in addition to demands for minimal downtime and the requirement for sophisticated redundancies in the case of hardware or software failure have led to the development of unique solutions to a range of industrial computing and software needs.
Below we will discuss:
- a new ARM-based panel PC from ICP Electronics
- next generation Avalue COM Express boards available from Backplane Systems Technology
- Apacer's ultra high speed industrial CFast memory cards
- ACECS cloud enabled convoy service software; and
- the upcoming Rockwell Automation Software Technical Education (RSTechED) conference.
IEI Technology's ARM-based IOVU-572M panel PC
Now available from ICP Electronics Australia, IEI Technology's ARM-based IOVU-572M panel PC is a 5.7 inch RISC-based panel PC that features a TFT VGA LCD resistive touch screen, MARVELL XScale PXA310 624MHz processor, 128MB NAND Flash and 256MB DDR SDRAM.
Preinstalled with the Windows CE 6.0 operating system, as well as Windows CE6.0 SDK for user application software development, this panel PC is ideal for a variety of applications, including:
- industrial automation
- multimedia; and
- digital signage.
New Avalue COM Express boards
Avalue's new COM Express boards are supplied locally by Backplane Systems Technology, and are powered by 3rd generation Intel Core i5/i7 processors, and the Mobile Intel QM77 Express chipset.
Compared to the previous generation Intel Core processor family, this new platform delivers:
- up to 15％ more CPU performance
- up to 50％ more 3D Graphics performance; and
- up to 1.8x HD to HD transcode speed.
Ultra high speed industrial CFast memory cards from Apacer Technology
Addressing the need for data transmission efficiency and speed improvements in the ever-evolving core technologies of embedded systems, Apacer's new CFast memory cards are designed to support SATA II 3Gb/s high-speed transmission mode.
They feature a peak reading speed of 160MB/s, breaking the speed limits of CF cards currently used by industrial enterprises. Apacer states that this is three times faster than typical industrial CF cards.
Additional features of Apacer's new CFast memory cards include:
- the ability to function in extended operating temperatures (-40°C to 85°C)
- availability in capacities of 64GB (SLC) and 128GB (MLC)
- Secure Erase command functionality to completely clear the data in the storage blocks for effective data security; and
- support for Apacer’s exclusive value-added technologies, including CoreProtector and CoreErase.
Avalue Cloud Enabled Convoy Service software
Another new addition to the industrial computers and software market from Avalue Technology, the new ACECS software (Avalue Cloud Enabled Convoy Service) incorporates the latest cloud computing concepts.
ACECS is designed to provide convenient management solutions for embedded applications, allowing users to remotely control configurations, monitoring and automatic alerts via email or SMS, and provide system maintenance backup and recovery functions if needed.
Avalue states that by enabling users around the globe to access the cloud and link to devices via the Internet, ACECS assists in:
- reducing maintenance costs
- improving efficiency; and
- reducing down time. It is intended to offer a simple method of controlling panel PC devices.
Rockwell Automation Software Technical Education (RSTechED) conference
The annual Rockwell Automation Software Technical Education (RSTechED) conference is set to return to Melbourne in 2013, bringing together software technical experts, system integrators, machine builders and end users.
Taking place at the St Kilda Novotel, the conference will run from 20th - 22nd February, 2013, and will build on last year's theme of Inspire, Educate, Innovate: Create Your Competitive Advantage. Software focused ‘hands-on’ laboratory sessions will be combined with interactive presentations.
The latest Rockwell Automation products and technology solutions will be available in a classroom environment. Participants will receive an insight into how the Integrated Architecture system is helping companies around the world.
