Canoe manufacturer Australis Canoes from Bellambi in NSW has managed to stay afloat by sticking to manufacturing.

As the Illawarra Mercury reports, the company has not followed the lead of other retailers who import equipment. Instead the company, owned by brothers David and John Slattery, concentrates on its own quality canoes and kayaks.

"What's happened is that many people are bringing stuff in from China. They're shipping it in themselves and trading it themselves and it's just destroyed the market," John Slattery told the Mecury.

He added that he believes the only reason the company has survived is that it has sticked to manufacturing.

Australis Canoes has been operating from its Bellambi base for almost 30 years. The company employs a team of Illawarra-based workers.

According to David Slattery, after sales services has also been an important part of the company’s success. Experience and expertise is always well-regarded.

"We don't just want to sell a kayak; we want to show people how to paddle in it. It really makes the difference," he said.
