Expand Networks  have announced that the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) are implementing Expand Networks’ WAN optimisation technology to complete their organisation-wide virtualisation strategy of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). Deployed in the datacentre as a virtual image on existing VMware ESX Hypervisor, Expand Networks’ virtual accelerators will enable the rollout by Australian Bureau of Statistics to migrate employees across the country to VDI.

Accelerating the delivery of traffic over the WAN by over 300%, the implementation of WAN optimisation technology is intended to bring users across seven regional offices into proximity of their applications and datacentre services.

Leveraging existing virtual infrastructure in the datacentre, Expand Networks’ WAN optimisation technology is deployed as a ‘virtual image.’ According to Australian Bureau of Statistics, virtual accelerators will help them realise their virtual investment. Delivering advanced levels of VMware integration, Australian Bureau of Statistics can use VMware’s suite of services to deploy, manage, maintain and assure the Expand Networks virtual accelerator image within the existing virtualised infrastructure.

According to VMware, they will work with Expand Networks to help Australian Bureau of Statistics transform their operations, delivering benefits of virtualisation including reduced capital and operating costs. Virtual accelerator will extend users’ capacity to Australian Bureau of Statistics existing infrastructure, assuring the VDI experience for their employees and stretching existing network and hardware investments. The implementation of WAN optimisation technology will also enable the replacement of local tape backup procedures with IBM Tivoli network backup.

Expand’s Networks’ virtual accelerators live within and accelerate out of virtual environments, ensuring the success of VDI strategies using techniques such as byte-level compression and caching that specifically enable real-time interactive TCP traffic and RDP protocols to be maximised. Expand Networks’ Layer 7 Quality of Service (QoS) enforcement provides monitoring and control at the application layer and can ensure that applications run unimpeded on the WAN. This includes prioritisation, sophisticated algorithms to combat congestion, mark packets for downstream QoS handling and rate control shaping to make sure data flows get the bandwidth they need.

According to Expand Networks, virtual accelerator are accelerator ‘images’ and avoid the need for additional hardware, while providing benefits such as application acceleration and QoS. Virtual accelerators enable the installation, configuration of a virtual appliance and optimise traffic before a physical appliance can be boxed and labelled for shipment.
