Ergomotion is sponsoring a national campaign organised by the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute (Baker IDI) to counter the health effects of sedentary behaviour in the office.
The ‘On Your Feet’ campaign urges companies across Australia to get their employees to wear sneakers to work on February 19, encouraging them to be on their feet, and in the process also help raise funds to support Baker IDI and its research on improving the health of Australians.
For over ten years Baker IDI Physical Activity laboratory has been researching the effects of sedentary behaviour on health. Health effects associated with excessive sitting include greater risk of premature death; greater risk of early death due to a cardiovascular event; and association with known risk factors of chronic disease such as increased waist circumference, unhealthy levels of blood glucose, insulin, and blood fat, and diminished physical functioning.
Baker IDI has gathered evidence that briefly breaking up sitting time as often as possible (ideally every 20 minutes or so) is beneficial. The On Your Feet Australia campaign has been initiated to spread the message and raise awareness about the dangers of sedentary lifestyles as well as the need to break up sitting time at regular intervals.
Ergomotion is also giving away a height adjustable desk to promote the ‘On Your Feet’ campaign. Contestants simply have to post a photo of their workplace getting on their feet on Instagram using #OYFA2014.
