Dueltek offers 50-micron fibre optic cables that are fully backward compatible with all 62.5-micron applications. These fibre cables are multimode duplex cables with a core thickness of 50 microns and an external cladding of 125 microns.
Bandwidth is the primary difference between 50-micron and 62.5-micron cables. 50-micron cables feature three times the bandwidth of standard 62.5-micron cables, particularly at 850-nm.
The 850-nm wavelength is a crucial factor because of the use of lasers as a light source.
While both 62.5-micron and 50-micron cables feature the same glass cladding diameter of 125 microns, the 50-micron fibre optic cables feature a smaller core, which is the light-carrying portion of the fibre.
One could use both in the same type of networks, although 50-micron cables are recommended for premise applications such as backbone, horizontal, and intra-building connections.
The 50-micron fibre optic cables should be especially considered for any new construction and installation. Both types of cable can use LED or laser light sources.
Differences also exist in distance and speed. The 50-micron cable provides longer link lengths and/or higher speeds in the 850-nm wavelength.
