A fume collection system installed by Donaldson Australasia at OneSteel Reinforcing has enabled fumes containment on a process line at their Sydney plant.
The Revesby site of OneSteel Reinforcing produces galvanised wire mesh for commercial, residential and civil construction in addition to the mining and agriculture industries as well as the manufacturing sector.
OneSteel recently upgraded its welding automation system and consulted Donaldson Australasia to design and build a fume collection system based on its patented Downflo DFO 3-18 technology as a preventive mechanism.
OneSteel specified a collection capacity for the fume collection system that well exceeded its current maximum fume output in keeping with their policy of implementing pollution control solutions that could easily accommodate future growth.
Welding galvanised wire produces weld fumes and depending on the process used, can produce more fumes than other welding processes.
As part of its upgrade, OneSteel installed a new machine system for welding sheets of galvanised mesh as well as a purpose-specific gantry-operated handling machine to process the large mesh sheets.

A hood-based fume collection system presently contains fumes from the galvanised welding process at the Sydney plant site. OneSteel chose to upgrade and modernise the fume collection system to meet future fume containment needs caused by increased manufacturing.
Donaldson modelled the site’s fume control solution in a 3D digital environment so that OneSteel could test all the structures.
Donaldson design engineers configured the machine especially the hood, and constructed the system to reduce risks caused by sparks created by the induction welding process.
Donaldson’s Downflo Oval Series (DFO) of patented dust collectors utilises oval-shaped cartridges to allow large amounts of air flow through the collector without increasing the footprint size or damaging filters.
The DFO Series uses a smaller collector, minimising initial purchase price, reducing filter replacement costs and decreasing the footprint.
Compared with standard industry performance, DFO collectors provide about 25% more capacity than other similar-sized dust collectors in the market. A patented ExtraLife filter cleaning system averages up to 30% increase in pulse cleaning efficiency for excellent cleaning ability.
Additionally, unique oval-shaped Ultra-Web cartridge filters provide a long filter life and high filtration efficiency to further lower the operating cost.
