The SF2, available from Dominion Electronics , is a stand-alone, managed Fast Ethernet switch that comes in a compact 3U, 18HP, 19" cassette. It provides eight channels at the front panel accessible through RJ45 connectors.
The SF2 is managed by its own FPGA-based low-power CPU that integrates the management firmware. The entire switch consumes less than 7W and needs no cooling. A service interface is accessible at the front panel, providing an easy way to configure the switch using an SMB interface on a standard D-Sub connector.
The ports are individually configurable. Using a hardware key, a Telnet command line interface or SNMP (Version 3) also makes maintenance easy, for example, when the switch is used on board a vehicle or in automation applications.
The SF2 supports full-duplex and half-duplex operation, high-speed non-blocking and forward switching with auto-negotiation, Layer-2 switching, Quality of Service (QoS) support with four traffic classes IEEE 802.1p and three level 802.1q security.
The switch is fault tolerant and restores itself on its own. If a link is temporarily unavailable, it will work again after the disturbance without any restart or reset. Its built-in test mechanisms make the SF2 an even more reliable component in the communication system.
In addition, the switch also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE) on ports 0 and 1 and can act as a Power Source Equipment (PSE) or Powered Device (PD). The SF2 was specifically designed for rugged mobile communication systems.
It is thus for example fully compliant with the EN 50155 railway standard. All components inside the cassette are specified for a -40 to +85°C operation temperature. There are no socketed components, hardening the box against shock and vibration.
