A new marine habitat mapping system used to assess the environmental impacts of the INPEX Ichthys LNG project will be on public display for the first time at this month’s Australasian Oil & Gas Exhibition & Conference (AOG) in Perth. AOG is organised by Diversified Exhibitions Australia .
GO VisionsTM, a diverless solution for marine habitat mapping and monitoring by Perth-based marine science company Geo Oceans, will be one of 16 cutting-edge products, projects and technology on show in the Innovation Zone at Australia’s largest oil and gas event.
The GO VisionsTM system, which has just been awarded a $20,000 innovation voucher from the Government of Western Australia’s Innovation Centre, utilises high definition camera components, spatial positioning technology and specialised software to collect and process high quality, spatially accurate data in real-time whilst in the field.
The system has proven successful on several of the worlds largest oil and gas projects for clients such as Chevron, Apache and INPEX, including the Ichthys project, where Geo Oceans mapped the distribution of the coral, seagrass, macro-algae and sponge communities and the substrates in an area covering 10,000km² from the mouth of the Adelaide River to Darwin Harbour.
Geo Oceans’ Commercial Manager, Nick Veitch said the company would use the government funding to further develop and commercialise its system.
“Our existing software has been working very effectively on some large resources projects, but it is still a prototype and will benefit from further development and refinements. We are currently working with a software engineer and hope to have the software redevelopment completed by late February,” said Veitch.
Situated in the foyer of Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre at AOG, the Innovation Zone is designed to provide a showcase for innovative products, projects and technology that can be further explored on the exhibition floor.
Visitors to AOG 2012 will be greeted by a series of custom made ‘pods’ heralding the scope of innovation taking place in the oil and gas world, including new developments from industry leaders such as FMC Technologies and Dynapumps.
“The Innovation Zone is a testament to the cutting-edge products, projects and technologies that are emerging from Australia’s oil and gas industry, particularly within Western Australia,” said AOG Event Director, Bill Hare.
