Design of Offshore Facilities under Scrutiny at AOG 2011

Supplier News

The upcoming Australasian Oil & Gas Exhibition & Conference (AOG) organised by Diversified Exhibitions Australia will feature a session designed to improve understanding of safety risks associated with oil and gas production, focusing on the design and layout of offshore oil and gas facilities.

In a presentation titled ‘Designing Offshore Facilities for Inherent Safety’, Clive Rawson of Perth-based Oracle Risk Consultants will discuss the inherent hazards of offshore facilities and explain how they can be best designed to achieve a safe working environment.

Mr Rawson says that fire and explosion risks associated with hydrocarbon production, the need to travel in all weather conditions via helicopter or boat and the remoteness of offshore facilities usually mean the people working on these facilities are required to live in a hazardous environment for the duration of their working cycle.

Mr Rawson said one way of reducing safety risks was to ensure the layout of offshore facilities was optimised to segregate people from major hazards while facilitating escape and evacuation during an emergency.

The session will explain how this can be done on modern offshore facilities compared to older facilities.

This presentation will be one of several at the Safety Session of AOG 2011 with other presentations focusing on managing hazard and risk in diving environments, human failure and major accident risks, health and safety regulatory trends in Australia as well as the Montara Commission of Inquiry.

Mr Rawson hopes that session attendees will take away learnings such as:

  • Improved understanding of the hazards and types of incidents that can occur within the oil and gas industry
  • Appreciation of the challenges and pitfalls in minimising safety risk
  • Understanding of how attention to an inherent safe design can have an impact on risk

The AOG exhibition floor will continue the safety theme with a dedicated Health & Safety Zone set to display the latest in OH&S products and services including training, fire protection, risk analysis, risk management, marine safety and rescue as well as HSE management systems.

AOG 2011 oil and gas exhibition will take place at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre from 23 February to 25 February, 2011.
