Leading supplier of logistics automation, warehousing, materials handling and storage systems, Dematic has achieved Bronze Partnership Status with the NSW Government for the Sustainability Advantage Programme.
At a recent ceremony held by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage in Sydney, NSW Environment Minister Robyn Parker acknowledged Dematic and 33 other leading NSW businesses for their outstanding productivity, efficiency and energy savings.
Operating a manufacturing facility on the edge of the national park in Belrose, Dematic has always prioritised environmental management since becoming a member of the Sustainability Advantage Programme in 2007.
Dematic CEO, Glen Borg believes that Australian industry has a responsibility to operate in a sustainable manner, continuously improving how things are done to minimise the impact on the environment. Since setting up their Environmental Steering Committee four years ago, Dematic has been able to identify areas for improvement, allowing the company to reduce waste, increase recycling and cut down on their use of resources.
Some of the initiatives taken by the company include conducting extensive risk analysis and resource assessments at the facility, identifying key areas of improvement and making significant changes in the way it operates from switching to more efficient IT equipment to redesigning products and packaging to reduce steel content and waste.
Dematic was able to achieve a 37% increase in production during the year with only a 20% increase in electricity usage, an effective improvement of 12.7% in electrical efficiency, which was achieved through investment in more efficient production technology and air conditioning, reduction of waste in lighting, heating, computing and cooling, as well as investment in more efficient computing equipment. New procedures have also been put into place to help protect the national park area that surrounds the facility, including a comprehensive spill management initiative.
Dematic’s Bronze Partnership marks another step in its continuous process of improvement, along with the organisation’s ISO14001 certification. Dematic is now focusing on engaging their suppliers in the programme, whilst continuing to identify areas of internal improvement with the ongoing support of the Sustainability Advantage Programme.
