A drilling industry support company approached Custom Fluidpower for assistance with research and development of drilling mud cleaning rigs.
The customer intended to use drilling mud cleaning rigs as an alternative to the conventional open pit next to drill rigs designed to hold the drilling mud. The mud cleaning rigs would enable significant cost savings for drilling companies in terms of environmental costs.
The proposed rig would be mobile and fit on the back of a truck with the capability of jacking itself up off the truck to stay onsite until the drilling is complete.
The rig also needed to remove large particles from the drilling mud with baffle plated tanks where the dirt could settle and a screw classifier to remove the particles for pumping out by an industrial pump.
While an external engineer was contracted to design the unit, Custom Fluidpower was called upon to assist with the hydraulic system.
Custom Fluidpower designed two manifolds with Sun Hydraulics valves for the jacking and control of the rigs while recommending Parker pumps to be incorporated to fill the flow and pressure requirements.
Hydac filtration was also incorporated to ensure that the oil stayed at a satisfactory cleanliness level for maximum product as well as hydraulic system life and performance.
Custom Fluidpower installed and commissioned hydraulic systems for a total of nine drilling mud cleaning rigs, working closely with the engineering consultant throughout the project.
