These gear couplings are especially well suited to diesel engine drives, where the driven components have relatively small inertias and are required to run over a wide speed range from low idling rpm to full engine speed, free from dangerous resonances.
For these applications, a torsionally very soft couple is desirable, because the whole drive power train is then subjected to low vibratory torques, and is hence more lowly stressed.
Centamax-S couplings have a torsional deflection of about 12º at nominal torque and about 30º at maximum torque for types SB.
Torsional deflection is intentionally lower at the larger types SC and SD, at around 6 - 8º at rated torque.
