The SR50A sonic ranging sensor from Campbell Scientific Aust was specifically designed to meet the requirements of snow depth measurement. Using SDI-12 protocol, the SR50A sonic ranging sensor supports various commands, which are entered as options in the SDI-12 recorder instruction. Users have the ability to output the distance to target in metres or feet, or to include measurement quality numbers.

The SR50A sonic ranging sensor allows users to measure distance from the sensor to a chosen target. Common applications for the SR50A include measuring water level and snow depth. However, it can also be used for various other applications.

The sensor is based around an electronic transducer that measures the distance to a target by sending out ultrasonic pulses and determining the time it takes for the echoes to return.

Specifications of the SR50A sonic ranging sensor include:

  • Less than 1 second measurement time
  • Low power drain on data logger
  • Accurate to 1cm or 0.4% of distance to target (whichever is greater)
  • Measurement range from 0.5 to 10m
  • Weight: 0.4kg
