Although formed in New Zealand just on five years ago, the Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited already is one of the world’s large dairy companies, with a supply chain spanning more than 140 countries. Purity of products, through the use of the available technology from farm to consumer, has been the cornerstone of the Group’s success.
When Fonterra took over Bonlac Foods Limited in Australia, it immediately looked to upgrade many of the Bonlac plants. At the Spreyton plant, near Launceston in Tasmania, stainless steel tubing in the sanitizer supply line had become pitted, was leaking and needed immediate replacement.
Fonterra sought advice from CalAir Piping Systems, who recommended that the stainless tubing be replaced with hygienic, maintenance-free Pro-Pipe II co-polymer lines.
CalAir installed 300 metres of 25mm OD Pro-Pipe II CH2 co-polymer for the new sanitizer line, using both welded and compression joints with nitrile sealing rings. CalAir later ran 50 metres of the same tubing for the sodium hydroxide system, but using Viton O rings in the compression joints.
Apart from being chemically inert, highly resistant to acid or alkaline corrosion and virtually maintenance-free, CalAir’s Pro-Pipe II tubing is easily and quickly installed in even complex situations. Pro-Pipe II tubing weighs far less than stainless steel tubing and can be reconfigured as required without trouble.
The CalAir piping does not have leakage problems and should operators need to modify or expand the system, it is easy to cut into the pipeline. No expensive outside skills are needed to do this and it can be done quickly without special tools using stock parts from CalAir’s piping inventory. Importantly, modification is fast and interruptions to production are minimal.
Pro-Pipe II also offers high and low temperature tolerances and is unaffected by fluctuations in ambient temperatures. CalAir offers a range of compression joint seals for various chemical and gas applications, enabling the polymer tubing to meet demanding production applications.
Pro-Pipe II systems offer a unique and major advantage by colour coding the pipe to fully comply with AS1345-1995. This feature offers significant advantages in the implementation of O.H. & S. risk management. It ranges from blue Air-Pro, violet |Chem-Pro, beige Gas-Pro, green Water-Pro, brown Oil-Pro, black Waste-Pro and red Fire-Pro piping, and is available for applications ranging from compressed air, chemicals, welding gas, fire services and water service systems.
Pro-Pipe II is three times lighter than copper, and available in a broad range of sizes from 12.5mm to100mm (outside diameter) in varying wall thicknesses.
The CalAir system offers a complete range of joints, cross-pieces, elbows, fasteners and fittings to assist plant engineers to quickly install and adapt it to their special needs. CalAir has completed more than 6,5000 installations worldwide since pioneering its tough, and easily erected co-polymer piping system more than 15 years ago.
