A TOUGH but lightweight compressed air reticulation system specifically formulated and manufactured in Australia for fire safety applications is being introduced by CalAir Pipe Systems .

The halogen-free flame-retardant (HFFR) CalAir's polymer piping system is designed for radically simplified erection, disassembly and recycling within a fraction of the time taken to construct and change traditional metal alternative conduit used in areas where volatile substances are in use, such as solvents, paint and petrochemicals.

CalAir managing director John McNab says the high pressure capability of the new polymer system overcomes the pressure limitations of PVC systems and expands the OHS and corrosion-free advantages of the lightweight systems into aggressive internal and external infrastructure and industrial environments.

These range from food and chemical processing plants, through to building services and heavy industrial and resources applications involving aggressive mechanical and natural environments.

Easily capable of handling typical industrial compressed air pressures of 7 bar or more, the new flame-retardant low toxicity HFFR range produces no corrosive or toxic flue gases in the event of a fire, making it suitable for high safety applications including subways, tunnels, industrial and resources infrastructure, some commercial and public building projects, and telecommunications and computer infrastructure, says Mr McNab.

Manufactured to the same standards of durability and quality as CalAir gas and liquid pipe systems used in 6,500 applications in Australia and internationally, the corrosion free HFFR systems are designed for use in critical applications where traditional conduit materials, such as PVC, are not permitted.

"CalAir HFFR compressed air systems - like CalAir HFT-free electrical conduit systems - are purpose-built for applications where human life and health may be at risk and high-cost assets are to be protected and where high fire safety requirements have to be met,” Mr McNab said.

“Its great advantages compared to metal alternatives often used in such situations are its light weight and great flexibility. Being multiple times lighter than metal alternatives, it can be easily installed with far fewer OHS issues than heavier materials.”

Properties of the new HFFR range include:

* Fire rating meets or exceeds UL 94V-0.

* No fire transmission or fire propagation.

* Low density and minimal formation of flue gases in the event of a fire.

* High temperature resistance.

* Low toxicity, non corrosive.

* High impact properties and stiffness.

* Excellent electrical and dielectrical properties.

The CalAir reticulation system is a totally integrated system, with a comprehensive range of joints, cross-pieces, elbows, fasteners and fittings.

Available in sizes from 12.5mm-100mm (Half-inch to four-inch nominal bore) it is simple, versatile and very flexible to use without requiring any expensive specialist trades such as welding.

Unlike metal welded systems - which frequently have to be junked when production facilities change location - the CalAir system can be dismantled, cleanly packed away and reconverted to a new use.
