The industry-leading WM8325 power management subsystem, a high current monolithic power management IC (PMIC) from Wolfson Microelectronics plc has been selected by NVIDIA as a PMIC partner for Tegra 2, one of the world’s first mobile super chips.

Tegra 2 brings extreme multi-tasking with a mobile dual-core CPU, superior and faster web experience, hardware accelerated Flash as well as console-quality gaming with a GeForce GPU.
Key features of the WM8325 power management system:
- Delivers a cost-effective, flexible power management solution for portable multimedia applications including smartbooks, tablet computers, e-books, media players and smartphones
- Incorporates four programmable DC-DC converters including one capable of delivering up to 2.5A
- 11 LDO regulators including four low-noise units for supplying sensitive analogue subsystems
- Optimised QFN package designed to improve thermal performance and reduce parasitic components, enabling low cost 4-layer PCB manufacturing
Dr Jess Brown, Wolfson’s Product Line Manager for Power Management says that the selection of WM8325 for NVIDIA’s highly innovative Tegra 2 processor is testament to the strength of the system, which delivers class-leading power management technology to next-generation multimedia processors.
He adds that the WM8325 improves battery life by up to 10% in comparison with competitor products and enables the use of smaller and lower cost external components.
Additionally, programmability of the device will lead to lower cost of ownership since the device can be re-used in multiple applications.
