According to Caelera , CSR continues to widen its market footprint beyond pure play Bluetooth transceivers with the demonstration this week of its BlueCore5-FM silicon which integrates Bluetooth and FM radio functions in a single chip.
BlueCore5-FM, which supports data transfer rates of up to 3Mbit/s, includes an FM radio in a 6x6mm VFBGA package. The FM radio is integrated using a low IF receiver architecture, followed by a digital signal processor based demodulator with interference suppression to ensure there is no conflict between the FM and Bluetooth radios.
CSR demonstrated the capabilities of its BlueCore5-FM technology at CTIA in Las Vegas. Part of the demonstration included the streaming of stereo audio over a Bluetooth connection to a pair of stereo headphones.
In a similar diversification move, last month CSR teamed with PortalPlayer, the US-based media player technology firm, on developments to add wireless connectivity to portable MP3 players.CSR will provide Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless comms technology to PortalPlayer's PP5022 applications processor family, based on CSR's UniFi Wi-Fi and BlueCore Bluetooth chips. The intention is to enable media players to link to PCs via Wi-Fi and to headsets via Bluetooth.
The firm has also opted to align its ultra wideband (UWB) product development with the WiMedia Alliance, one of two technology approaches being followed by developers of UWB products. A big part of CSR's plans for UWB is integration with its Bluetooth architecture which it claims will provide WiMedia UWB technology "quick access to the market and to hundreds of millions of Bluetooth enabled devices that are currently used"
