Siemens Drive Technologies will introduce its main drive systems of the 1PH8 motor series for belt-driven and coupled machine tool spindles at this year’s EMO trade show for machine tools in Milan. Available from CNC Design in Australia, the new 1PH8 range of motors for belt-driven and coupled machine tool spindles have been designed as main drives and are available as asynchronous and synchronous versions. The 1PH8 motors feature good dynamic response, smooth running properties and low vibration levels.

Compared to the previous 1PH7, 1PH4, 1PM6 and 1PM4 versions, the power output range on the 1PH8 series has been increased. The motors are available as main drives with power outputs ranging from 2.8 kW to 1,340 kW. The motors have been perfectly matched to the Sinamics S120 drive system, simplifying commissioning and enhancing the control response.

Different bearing designs extend the range of possible applications and for applications requiring a high degree of compactness, the synchronous version of 1PH8 motors can also be used. There are motors available with a solid or hollow shaft, different cooling methods such as water cooling, forced ventilation or, in future, self-cooling , plus absolute-value and incremental encoders. Due to the large power range, the high speed range of up to 20,000 r.p.m. and the modular design principle, the motors are suitable as standard drives for conventional machine tool spindles.
