Benefits of US FTA revealed
AUSTRALIAN businesses are not enjoying the benefits of the FTA (Free Trade Agreement) negotiated between Australia and the US – simply because they either haven’t had the time to read it or they just don’t understand it, says Alan Bennett, lawyer and author of CCH’s Guide to the Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA).
“The agreement came in to effect in January 2005 and since then the Australian market for exports has grown from 20 million people to 300 million.
“Despite this, Australian businesses are still paying too much duty on imports and not selling enough to the US. Consumers should be benefiting from the deal as tariffs on imports have dropped from as much as 12% to zero,” Bennett said.
The guide aims to help organisations manoeuvre the AUSFTA maze and provides a comprehensive review of the many aspects of the FTA.
