In one of the largest book and periodicals storage facilities in Australia, the University of Melbourne has recently upgraded its storage capacity with the unique Metalsistem Super 1-2-3 Series long span storage system from Bowen Group .
The Super 1-2-3 two-tier shelving module as installed consists of 1,300 bays of shelving, covering approximately 1,400 square metres of floor space. This unique modular shelving was selected as the short, 900 mm bay lengths allowed greater load distribution on to the concrete floor.
Its lightweight construction further reduced the loading on the floor, which would not have been able to accommodate a heavy, structural steel mezzanine system.
All beams are easily adjusted at all levels, which allowed simplified construction in the knowledge that the shelving could easily be rearranged as required to accommodate varying book sizes.
In addition, the open-plan construction created a light, bright environment for the librarians, reducing the need for artificial light sources. Staircases were included to provide access to the upper level and the complete structure was fitted with lighting including exit lighting.
Super 1-2-3 series shelving features:
- a modular, boltless shelving design
- high tensile steel structural components
- EN 10204 3.1B certification
- wide range of standard sizes
- shelf capacities of 130kg to 520kg
- the choice of metal or particleboard shelves
- metal or plastic perforated shelves for hygiene areas; and
- quick and easy assembly.
