Up she rises: without a hitch, but with plenty of jacks

One of Australasia’s biggest hydraulic lifting projects in recent years took place after a 120,000t coal ship struck a concrete loading wharf and glanced off a coal loader at Port Kembla in NSW.

Booths Hire was called in by Barclay Mowlem to help repair the damage. This involved lifting the complete 1280t coal loader on to two specially constructed trestles.

Booths used a number of Enerpac hydraulic cylinders, pumps, hoses, manifolds and gauges, including a dozen 100t RCS1002 low height cylinders in the lift.

The low-height cylinders offered 57mm of stroke from a low-profile cylinder with a collapsed height of just 141mm. These were complemented by four Enerpac RC506 50t cylinders with a 159mm stroke and four RC106 10t cylinders with the same stroke. A PEM2305E 240V hydraulic pump actuated the cylinders.
