Bomac Engineering was recently approached by a company regarding a fall arrest system that was needed over a twin loading bay for tankers.
The client already had a guard rail in place that would prevent employees from falling between the mezzanine floor and the tanker. However, the problem was that the company serviced a series of non-specific tankers that required flexibility and ease of movement to cover a range of heights. Additionally, they required two persons per fall arrest system.
A wire rope system would not be conceivable for a single person user as the bay is approximately 14m long with only one support between spans. In the scenario of two users, if one person had an incident the second person would be drawn down the wire rope to the first person, making retrieval of the employees onerous. Time is of the essence in a rescue situation so this scenario is not ideal. The pendulum effect of such a fall should also be taken into account.
The Altrac fall arrest system in conjunction with Strongbac proved to be the perfect solution. Altrac is a rigid rail system that easily spans 14m and can accommodate multiple users. As the rail has little deflection there is no scope for pendulum effect to occur.
Additional Altrac can be added should the client wish to extend the fall arrest system. This can be easily completed by adding joiners and additional Altrac.
Altrac rail, trac trolleys and bracketry is easy to inspect as the components are external to the rail. Altrac fall arrest system complies to AS1891 and EN795 standards.
