Bomac Engineering was approached by a chocolate manufacturing company to help them design a gantry crane to solve their materials handling problems.

Employees needed to pick 25kg bags of chocolate production ingredients from pallets, as they were needed for the recipe being produced at any given time. The easy way to get the pallets from the storage area to the employees was with the use of forklift trucks. The company, however, wanted to keep the foot traffic and forklift traffic separate.

The solution was an Altrac freestanding gantry crane. Altrac allowed the forklifts to bring pallets of ingredients to a workstation, where employees could use a vacuum lifter with a bag foot attached to the gantry crane to lift individual bags of ingredients onto a pallet to send to the production area, while the original pallets were returned to their storage area.

The ceiling was full of obstructions, so instead of a traditional roof-mounted gantry crane, Bomac decided to go with a freestanding one. Even though this involves a steel portal frame, the entire gantry system was installed in less than one day, cutting into their production time little.

By keeping employees separate from the forklift trucks and using a gantry crane to move the bags rather than lifting them manually, Altrac system created a much safer and more efficient work environment.

Altrac comes as a pre-engineered, modular structure in kit format that the purchaser can install. The track is self-cleaning and would not corrode or flake off. All Bomac Engineering products are compliant with Australian safety codes, including AS 1891.2 Fall Arrest.

Bomac and all its products are Australian owned, designed and fabricated.
