BlueScope Steel's $100 million investment yields more resilient line of steel for the Australian market

In an evolution of its flagship ZINCALUME brand, BlueScope Steel has invested more than $100 million to develop a more resilient line of steel designed specifically for the Australian market.

The next generation steel is created using a new manufacturing process that adds magnesium to the aluminium, zinc and silicon coating of traditional ZINCALUME steel. BlueScope states that this process forms a unique protective barrier which better protects the base metal layer, meaning that exposed surfaces are more resilient when drilled, cut or scratched during construction.

The innovative new steel product also provides a higher level of protection against corrosion, which is particularly relevant for Australian conditions.

BlueScope Steel Market Manager Manu Siitonen noted that the company's previous ZINCALUME steel product is renowned in the Australian building and architectural markets for its galvanised zinc coating, which gives it a self-sealing property and increases its lifespan.

"With Next Generation ZINCALUME steel, we have perfected a new formula that improves the galvanic action of the zinc. With the addition of a new magnesium compound, it activates the aluminium in the coating composition to provide even more effective corrosion resistance," he added.

To ensure the new steel metal coating formulation exceeds the durability of current ZINCALUME steel, it has undergone 10 years of accelerated laboratory testing and 17 years of environmental field testing.

It also carries a reduced environmental footprint in comparison to its predecessor, and will be available nationally from August 2013.
