F series foil strain gauges, manufactured by TML Japan and available locally from Bestech Australia , can be supplied in alloy foils from 0.003 to 0.007mm thick bonded on an epoxy resin backing of 0.03mm thickness.
The thickness of the epoxy resin backing on these strain gauges ensures excellent electrical insulation properties. The backing is also colour coded for use with a particular material.
Materials such as mild steel, stainless steel or aluminium each exhibit different thermal expansion characteristics, so this colour coding helps to ensure the correct gauge is used for an application, and strain measurements are as precise as possible.
F series foil strain gauges are available in most common patterns, including:
- single element
- 2 element cross stacked type; and
- 45º and 90º 3 element stacked type rosettes.
They offer a gauge factor of approximately 2.1, gauge lengths from 0.3 to 30mm, and gauge resistances from 60Ω to 1000Ω, with 120Ω and 350Ω being the most common gauge resistances.
Special purpose gauges are also available, including shear strain, torque and residual stress. In addition, F series gauges can be supplied for use with other specimen materials such as glass and ceramics.
