Byres Security acquired by Belden

Supplier News

Belden Australia announces the acquisition of Byres Security Inc. (BSI) by leading signal transmission company, Belden Inc.

Belden’s acquisition of Byres Security is aimed at increasing its ability to protect industrial automation systems from cyber attack. Byres' award-winning Tofino security technology in particular strengthens Belden's leadership in industrial networking solutions.

Increasing PLC vulnerabilities and the Stuxnet cyber attack have made the industrial control system and SCADA operators more aware of the need for improving cyber security at the plant and management levels of organisations.

Byres Security’s flagship product, the Tofino Industrial Security Solution combines security appliances with loadable software modules to protect industrial networks from external cyber threats and internal network accidents. The technology is designed for simple implementation without requiring plant shutdowns.

Tofino Security is used by the process control, SCADA, manufacturing and automation industries across the power generation (conventional and alternative), transmission and distribution, factory and process automation, oil and gas, traffic and railway, embedded systems, and manufacturing sectors.

Belden has been using Tofino Security technology in its Eagle line of security products for the past two years while BSI has been using Belden’s Hirschmann hardware in many of its Tofino Security products over the same period, demonstrating synergy between the two companies’ technologies and capabilities.

The Tofino solution received the Frost & Sullivan's World Customer Value Enhancement Award in 2010. The Award honours the product that best enhances customer value in the industrial automation and electronics industries each year.

The acquisition of BSI by Belden will result in a greater leadership position in both industrial networking and industrial security solutions.

BSI will run as an independent business unit under Belden and will continue to:

  • Develop technology for robust industrial control system security
  • Help companies adopt industrial security solutions
  • Advocate for a higher level of industrial cyber security within organisations
  • Contribute to the development of industrial cyber security standards
BSI founders, Eric and Joann Byres will remain the head of Byres Security (Joann as General Manager and Eric as CTO and VP of Engineering).
