Indoor air quality monitoring serves two major purposes; it assists in helping building occupants to stay alert and refreshed, and protects workers from potentially toxic and combustible gas hazards.

A more comfortable working environment improves productivity, but an ongoing challenge for ventilation designers looking to optimise energy usage is providing the correct level of cooling for the actual occupancy of a building.

IAQPoint2 touchscreen indoor air quality monitors solve the problem of excessive energy costs by utilising Demand Controlled Ventilation (DCV). When compared to Constant Air Volume (CAV) ventilation systems, DCV systems have been found to reduce energy consumption by up to 62%.

IAQPoint2 monitors measure three variables:

  • CO2 or Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
  • temperature; and
  • humidity.
High levels of CO2 can cause drowsiness and create an inefficient work environment for building occupants, so monitoring this gas is appropriate for environments where the presence of VOCs are not a major concern.

Increasingly, studies show a connection between the presence of VOCs and adverse health effects. BW Technologies notes that commercial and industrial buildings can contain VOCs by the thousands, such as:

  • organic odours, aerosols, disinfectants and cleansers
  • paints, waxes, cleaning supplies and pesticides
  • Fuel cans, solvents, preservatives, automotive and vehicle products; and
  • formaldehyde carpets.
IAQPoint2 monitors detect these VOCs as well as many gases common to building areas including methane, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide.

Whether monitoring CO2 or VOCs, IAQPoint2 monitors are designed to be easy to use, featuring a unique, patented touchscreen monitor that simplifies installation and commissioning in addition to user operation. A USB port is also provided to allow users to create and update a unique front screen, and to allow for future uploads of product enhancements.

The inclusion of temperature and humidity sensors allows users to adjust the temperature of a room at the touch of a button, eliminating the need for extra air quality monitoring devices. Combined with the low power consumption and 'sleep mode' functionality of IAQPoint2 monitors, this assists in optimising HVAC use and extending the life of components.

For maximum installation flexibility the monitors can be wall or duct mounted, and can be powered by DC or AC power, fitting a standard junction box.

To further simplify installation and maintenance, the five year sensor in the monitors can be automatically self-calibrated, requiring only the connection of a calibration tube for fast and accurate bump testing without the need to open the case.
